COLEACP-PIP invites you to read the new edition of CTA Agritrade Copendium which analyses and reviews developments in the agricultural and fisheries sectors of ACP countries
From 21 to 23 February, a sub-regional workshop organised by COLEACP and the PIP and EDES programmes, in partnership with the national programmes PAFASP, PCDA, PDMAS and FIRCA, will be held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

An Ethiopian horticultural company, whose core business is growing, processing and exporting fresh herbs to the EU market applied for support from the PIP for among other things the installation of the BRC quality system in its pack house.
A BRC implementation training was recently organized within this company. The training concerned 9 people from middle management staff, took 13 days and was given by a regional expert trained by PIP.

Sustainability is progressively reaching the top of the agenda of an increasing number of consumers
Labels showing carbon-dioxide emissions associated with making and transporting products first appeared in 2007 in Britain. Since this time the use of carbon labels, though still not mainstream, has increased; in Britain, for example, in 2010 sales of carbon labeled products exceeded total sales of organic and fair trade products. The concept of footprinting is now gaining ground in other areas where production and consumption have an impact on sustainability and the environment, water footprinting in particular.

Last week at the IFOAM General Assembly in the Republic of Korea (October 3-5), James Cole of Eloc Farms in Ghana was appointed to the World Board of IFOAM. He joins Manjo Smith from Namibia, and 8 other Board members, for the term 2011- 2014.
Directive 91/414/EEC stipulates that a review must be conducted of all existing plant protection products in use within the European Union. The review period started in 1993, and will be completed by the end of 2012. The review has been used to establish a new list of approved active substances (named Annex I to Directive 91/414/EEC). Individual Member States can only authorise plant protection products whose active substances are included in this list. Inclusion in Annex I is in general for a period of 10 years, after which time each pesticide must be reviewed again.
