Protecting Crops from Solar Damage

Sunburn and heat stress can lead to significant crop losses and PIP has received a number of enquiries on this subject.

One grower in Ghana was experiencing a particular problem of sunburn in pineapple, and was advised by PIP to try out the relatively new plant protectant: Purshade. This is a calcium-based protectant, engineered with patent-pending Advanced Reflectance Technology, which selectively reflects harmful ultraviolet and infrared radiation, while still allowing for photosynthesis to occur.

PIP has found no restrictions regarding use of the product on crops destined for the EU market. According to the supplier, it is registered in Spain, Italy and Netherlands. It is composed mainly of limestone and quartz, both of which are Annex I listed (Directive 91/414EC) and no Maximum Residue Limit is required for any crop.

Reports suggest it is effective in a wide range of crops. The experience of the grower in Ghana indicated very positive results in terms of reduced sunburn and good crown length. However, testing here was not conducted under experimental conditions, and further information would be valuable. If any growers are experiencing similar problems, and would be interested in trying out the product, further information on Purshade can be obtained on the following website: http://www.purfresh.info/app_purshade.htm

PIP would appreciate any feedback from growers who have experience on Purshade or who plan to try it out, in order to share this information with other growers.
